Project X - harder than anything

Hard is a word commonly used to describe – well how difficult some things can be. Hard is also a word used far to loosely when it comes to games. There’s a lot of games out there that are hard – in the sense they are difficult to complete. But try this on for size. What if I told you of a game , so far above the concept of hard that I, having played it on and off for about 14 years, have only made it to level 2 in the game, one time...

I reckon I must’ve played it around one-hundred times – and that’s a really shitty statistic. Either I’m really lousy at the game or it’s fucking hard – and believe me it’s fucking hard. The game in question is Team 17’s – Project X. The game was released in 1992 and consisted of five levels (where I’ve only seen two) and is a ‘standard’ side-scrolling shoot-em-up, differing from the rest of the genres standards, by having great graphics, liquid-smooth game play and really cool music. And did I forget to mention its ‘arcade mode’ (normal difficulty) is best described as diamond plus. Diamond being categorized as - the hardest known material in existence – well, that was until 1992, when Project X was released.

I do admit I’m fairly impatient, hence the title of my blog, but I’m also really stubborn and patient when it comes to challenges. So given the 14 plus years I’ve had to beat this game, I should have been able to accomplish this - but still I struggle playing the game for any longer than 5 minutes at a time before all my lives are exhausted. Let my just fire up my emulator, and I’ll time it how long I’m able to play…

3 minutes and 20 seconds

I lost all lives but one in the first minute, and then managed to scramble through the next 2 minutes and 20 seconds with relative ease until I met this fucker:

and then I promptly died, which seems to be the general cause of action when playing Project X. You fire it up and die, die, die, die and game over.

If you’re up for a challenge, find it, download it and fire it up. Then perhaps you’ll fare better than me – but I seriously doubt it.

PS – It’s still one of the best games for the amiga 500 in my opinion. Team 17 rules!

I agree on it being extremely hard, especially those end-level bosses. It's been a while since I played it, but one thing I remember in particular is those KICK ASS weapons you get as you progress into the game.

Of course I played it with a trainer back in the days (I know, it takes the fun out of it sometimes), but now I know what to do in that sparetime at work tomorrow :-)
